Idea Napkin No. 2

You
My name is Orlantha. I am a junior in the Business Administration at UF. I retained my first degree in Industrial Engineering which I worked in for a few years before pivoting to business. I am back in school to gain the business acumen needed to change fields. I consider myself to be a hardworking people person. The connections I have made throughout the years personally and professionally have helped me succeed. I aspire to enter a role in the feasibility stage of New Product Development whether it is within a company or at a consulting firm. This business concept has helped me understand the customers I will interact with in the future. Entrepreneurs or product developers will approach me to decide if their product is worth making and will be successful. They will develop business plans and it is very helpful to understand the process of developing one.

What are you offering to customers?
The service offered to customers has not changed very much. This is a monitoring system for levies around the Missouri River to help prevent unsafe tolerances and help those who maintain the area and plan maintenance accordingly and assess damage when needed.

Who are you offering it to?
My main target market is still local and state governments who are in charge of making decisions regarding the levy sites.

Why do they care?
Governments’ main directives are to help the communities function to the best of their ability. If those communities struggle to make revenue then there is a chain reaction that will affect not only those farmers but the towns and cities around them such as grocery stores, retail, and overall economy in the area.

What are your core competencies?
After realizing my core competencies included social connections, I can use this to create connections within the government as well as those Subject Matter Experts that I referenced before. Being able to collect information and talent from anywhere opens up the talent pool unlike the current local government in which one person “wears many hats.”
I still believe getting Government contracts can be difficult but with one successful monitoring system, there can be openings for more monitoring systems in other locations.

I believe these elements will fit well together. I still believe the weak points are my knowledge or capability to build this monitoring system on my own. I will need help of different types of engineers to develop this product.

Feedback Memo
I received great feedback from the comment I received. Overall, I decided to specify core competencies based on the secret sauce assignment and also to reflect on how the previous research can help develop this product further.

  1. Hi Orlantha. It sounds like you have a solid idea here that could potentially be very helpful to communities. You seem to have a good amount of social capital and personal experience to help you in creating your business. I like that you incorporated your feedback from the "Secret Sauce" assignment into your core competencies. That was a really good idea. I don't have much feedback to offer about your idea because I have no experience in that area, but I think you did a good job on including all of the information needed for the assignment.
