Reading Reflection No. 1
For this assignment I read Miracles Happen by Mary Kay Ash
1)
As someone who has not had many interactions
with Mary Kay line other than my mom bringing home Mary Kay Products when I was
younger, I honestly was surprised to hear that the type of product selling had
never existed before. I admired the most that this was a company based on the
Golden Rule- which meant women were created equal and it was a way for them to
make money outside the home. Although many startup companies at the time relied
on family support, she took a large risk bringing her family into the business
without knowing if it would be a success. I don’t think I would have risked my
child’s career for my gain. I believe that starting the company. The reason she
started her company was to battle the adversity of gender equality in the
workplace and create a business where women could take sales into their own
hands without any male counterparts. Her early classes were all based on failures,
each time they were able to see what worked and didn’t work and improve on classes
in order to teach salespeople how to sell their product.
2)
She was a risk taker who believe in equal rights
for men and women. Having experienced this adversity, she created an environment
for women who did not have many other opportunities.
3)
A confusing part of the book was when she
describes many of her processes like selling wigs- I am not familiar with any Mary Kay products so I
needed to pay closure attention to those explanations.
4)
If I was able to speak with her, I would ask her
if she had any advice for a budding entrepreneur? And what other ideas she had
that she didn’t have time or resources to pursue?
5)
I believe Mary Kay was the epitome of hard work.
Building a business from the ground up is difficult in itself, she went again
all the advice her accountant and lawyer told her and was willing to work long
hours for many years to build her business and brand.
Hi Orlantha,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post because I also got the chance to read about Mary Kay Ash. I liked getting to see your different perspectives and see what you enjoyed most about reading the book. I also did not know about her products before reading the book. Overall, it was a good post, but next time you can add a little more detail to express your ideas better.

Hi Orlantha. I decided to read your post because I didn't know much about Mary Kay previously, but have known people who have used her makeup line. I love that she created her company to empower women and give them more opportunities to work outside the home. I didn't know that she was so revolutionary with this concept. I think it's great when women help empower other women. I feel like you have to be a risk taker when you're an entrepreneur in order to be successful. She was definitely very successful and an icon to many. Good job!
