Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2


Who: After conducting interviews with several people about my idea, most fall outside of the immediate boundary because they will not be making decisions for those county or government officials. So I decided to speak with a Civil Engineer who works for a private company that works with government sponsored projects. These companies are contracted by the city and state governments to solve issues such as transportation and flood zones. She had previous experience with flood zones in South Florida and was interested to see what kind of levies could be put into place in the Midwest.

What: The need I have identified was the cost of food rising to account for the reduction in crops. After interviewing more people, I realize this need is specific to the farms that were subject to flooding in the Midwest.

Why: The outsiders’ need for more cost efficient crops is different from the immediate need of farmers because farmers and local government will be the ones making structural decisions.

    Hi Orlantha. I think you have a really good idea here. I like how it’s a current and ongoing problem that legitimately is in need of a solution. Are you from the midwest or have family there, or is it just an issue you stumbled upon? Next time, I think you should add a little description of your topic sooner on because I was confused until the end. Other than that good job.

      No, I raised in Florida! I originally looked at this assignment as large scale issues like global warming then did some research into what issues people face everyday

    Hi Orlantha! This is a super interesting idea. You did a great job identifying that there are multiple needs here and that you have to decide which one you want to address. There is the farmer's need for more cost efficient crops, and then there's the consumer's need for more cost efficient produce. I think it's interesting that you decided to focus on the farmer's need rather than the consumer's need. I'd love to understand your reasoning behind that decision. Awesome job!

    I think the need to help farmers would be a smaller segment, like local government rather than going down stream to the consumer who couldn't do much to help remediate the situation.

For this assignment I read Miracles Happen by Mary Kay Ash 1)       As someone who has not had many interactions with Mary Kay line other than my mom bringing home Mary Kay Products when I was younger, I honestly was surprised to hear that the type of product selling had never existed before. I admired the most that this was a company based on the Golden Rule- which meant women were created equal and it was a way for them to make money outside the home.
