Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends
Regulatory Changes: Trump Administration ends OSHA program
protecting workers from developing Silicosis (Lung disease)
I read about this repeal through an NPR list of EPA
rollbacks of the Trump Administration
I believe there is an opportunity to offer the same
regulations of the program which start with manufacturing of the engineered
stone used for kitchen counter tops.
Who: I believe the customer will be there companies who
build and fit these countertops (contractor companies) and also Union workers.
This opportunity might be difficult to exploit because it
requires companies to purchase materials from companies who manufacture a safer
manufactured stone. Making an active choice to purchase downstream instead of
changing the manufacturing process in all manufacturing companies like a
Government regulation would.
I believe there is a market for this because General
contractors are common worldwide. This issue has been occurring and those
working with the dangerous manufactured stone are getting Silicosis and dying
in their early 30s. Companies will want to prevent loss of their workers and
workers will be deterred to work with this material knowing about the dangers
of the job.
Regulatory Changes: Florida Legislature allows physicians to
begin Telehealth Services
Source: https://www.govtech.com/computing/Florida-Legislature-Continues-Working-Toward-Telehealth-Law.html
I read about this change in the Florida Regulation changes
in 2019.
I believe there is an opportunity since most of Florida has
residents from out of state (Snowbirds) who usually have doctors in their full
time residences out of state to be able to prescribe emergency prescriptions or
check-ups.
Who: Physicians who have a large geriatric presence in their
practices who reside in Florida during the winter months.
This opportunity might be difficult to exploit because it
requires physicians to seek out this matching service and register through the
Florida Board of Medicine.
I believe there is a market for this because physicians who
would like to stay the primary care doctor for those who reside in and out of
state would be able to keep their patients and be able to bill Medicaid
appropriately.
Economic Trend: Red Tide is costing Florida money due to
loss of tourism income and clean up
I read about this economic trend while looking at changes
that effect Florida Tourism.
I believe there is an opportunity since Florida relies on
Tourism both within and outside the state of Florida
Who: Business Owners in Florida beach cities as well as
their workers.
This opportunity might be easy to exploit as business will
try to prevent the future loss of income.
I believe there is a market for this because Red Tide is a
historical issue and will need to put in prevention methods.
Economic Trend: Climate Change effects US economy:
specifically Agriculture
I read about this economic trend while researching major
trends of climate change
I believe there is an opportunity because we see the effects
of climate change, in agriculture specifically has been hit harder and harder
each year due to extreme rainfall, loss of planting days, and flooding.
Who: Farmers, Grocery stores, Distribution companies,
everyday customers will all feel the effects of continued loss in crops.
This opportunity might be easier to exploit as it effects
more people and farmers are also large contributors to political lobbyists.
I believe there is a market for this because
there are so many people affected by
Hi Orlantha! I think you picked some really good articles for this assignment. All of these could potentially have impacts that would affect current business or could create new ones as well. I especially think we'll see more businesses come from the issue of climate change. Also, the red tide in Florida is a big deal that is affecting our industries. Not sure what the solution would be for that, but I would love to see one. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteIt is going to be really hard to get companies to willingly spend more money for a safer product if the product is not immediately detrimental to the business. So, from my perspective I see two good options for implementing this observation (the first approach works together with the second). You could use activism or unionization to encourage the installers to pay more attention to the safety of their workers. The second option is that you could sell safety equipment like respirators to the installers so that their workers would be protected from harmful chemicals and they could still buy the less expensive materials.
