My Bug List

Here is my top 20 Bug List

1)      People do not move when an ambulance/police/firefighter trucks are behind them and 1 or 2 people put themselves in dangerous places to help them go by
Why? I am the person who will move out of the way, then after the truck moves by, I am in the intersection or unable to continue on to my destination without taking some U-Turns
2)      Signing up for rewards at a store means being in dated with emails when all you wanted was a promotional coupon.
Why? Many times stores offer a promotional discount, but for every 5 emails of junk, there is 1 coupon that doesn’t really relate to what you need.
3)      Going to the post office means wasting 30 minutes in order to mail out a package because you have filled out the wrong form or do not use the correct procedure
Why? If there was a list of what you needed or a postal worker who greeted you and showed you where the correct form was and showed you which line you should wait in.
4)      People who do not follow the 10 items or less rule in a grocery store and you end up spending more time waiting for a person who thinks the rules do not apply to them
Why? All time is valuable no matter who you are, there are specific lines for those who just need to grab a few things, if you have 40 items in a 10 item or less, you slow down the whole line.
5)      Once a car hits a specific mileage, everything starts to break down and you spend just as much money as you would to buy a new car (Monthly)
Why? The benefit of owning your car means you don’t have to pay a monthly loan, however once 5+ years occurs, cars start to have parts need replacements which can average out to monthly car payments at times.
6)      Getting charged different rates for the same Uber ride depending on the time of day
Why? Uber’s formula knows how often you travel to the same places and will charge you more for that ride because they know you need it. Taking advantage of a loyal customer.
7)      The sun sets so early during the winter (4:30pm in New England) which throws off your time of day.
Why? Getting out of work when the sun has set is depressing and by 6pm it feels like 10pm which makes you tired earlier and less productive.
8)      Comcast charges more in different locations for the same package
Why? Paying more for the same service depending on the concentration of people and taxes involved is discriminates all social classes because there are few good alternatives.
9)      Baby boomers do not know how to use technology like iPhone, yet want new iPhone then complain that their phones are not working
Why? Getting new technology and not having the patience to learn how to use their phones means their children have to spend time showing them how to do things or just doing things like setting up an iCloud themselves.
0)   Politics are becoming so polarized that the middle isn’t represented anymore which polarizes the system even more.
Why? Political parties have tried to separate themselves from the “other side of the isle” but in doing so have created a hole where the middle used to be and those people don’t like the current options on either side
11)   Student loan payments are so high that even if you have a well-paying job, you will be paying for 5+ years which means you can’t qualify for other loans like mortgages
Why? Society says we should go to college but because it is much more expensive than before, our parents didn’t save for it meaning we have to take out more loans. Paying $500 a month for a student loan payment can constrict the amount of money you can save for a house. The Student loan debt can also raise your interest rate because of your income to debt ratio which means paying more money for nothing overtime (interest).
12)   Congress are making laws for a world they don’t know anything about because the world was very different.
Why? Lawmakers making at least $174,000 per year do not understand what life is like to live at the poverty line of $21,000 and it shows.
13)   People who don’t take off their shoes when entering a house tracking in dirt and germs from the outside world
Why? Say you walk around your house barefoot, you will now have dirtier feet than if they took their shoes off at the door, or if you have a child who crawls around and plays on the floor, you now have to worry about what they are touching
14)   People who don’t fill an empty Brita water jug and put it back in the fridge now you can’t drink cold filtered water
Why? If you fill up the water after each use, you will have water available at any time versus having to wait for the entire section to finish filtering
15)   When people are rubbernecking which causes a traffic build up making everyone late or causing more accidents
Why? If the accident is on the other side of the road, it is more dangerous to stop or slow down and turn your head to watch
16)   Annoying commercials that you can’t get out of your head so you continue to replay it in your mind
Why? Usually you do not need to buy insurance in a car while you are driving, and you really wouldn’t think of that annoying commercial the next time you are looking for insurance either
17)   Your new favorite song is overplayed in a short period of time so instead of being your favorite song, it is your most hated
Why? Radio stations play popular songs to attract more listeners but every time they overplay a song, I end up changing the channel immediately.
18)   Finding out you paid too much for plane, car rentals, or hotel stays when booking in advance so why plan ahead in the first place
Why? Even if a ticket or hotel room goes on sale, they do not reward the prepared traveler by refunding their money either with cash or rewards points.
19)   People not replacing the empty toilet paper roll now you are uncomfortably stranded in the bathroom
Why? If you see the toilet paper roll is ending soon, it is common courtesy to replace it for the next person
20)   Not being able to find matching socks and then never having matching socks
Why? Even after buying 20 new pairs of socks, somehow socks start to get lost, somewhere, and you give up and start pairing similar sizes and colors and hope no one notices.
Reflection:
During this exercise I was able to think about things that affect everyday life as well as long term. I drive about three hours for work every day so I am quite familiar with this Bug list, even if it is just in my head. I found it much easier to think of long term issues like politics than everyday like the Brita filter. I believe this exercise is helpful to understand how the entrepreneur thought process works.

  1. HI Orlantha! I enjoyed reading your post. The things that bug you are pretty different than the things I came up with on my list, and I found it interesting to read. While your list is different than my list, I can relate to many of the things that bug you. Two of the things I can relate to you on are #13 and #19. I also dislike it when people don't remove their shoes when entering a house. We pick up so much dirt, germs, and things I don't even want to think about as we walk around each day. It's so unsanitary to track all of that into your house or someone else's house. Also, I hate when people are too lazy to change the toilet paper roll! No one likes to be stranded. :)
